VAR controversy overshadows Liverpool vs Wolves FA Cup draw

Liverpool and Wolverhampton drew 2-2 at Anfield in the FA Cup third round tie on Sunday. The teams will now meet again for a rematch at Molineux Stadium later this month.

Gonçalo Guedes put Wolves ahead in the game after Alisson’s howl in the 26th minute of the game. Darwin Núñez leveled the scores on the brink of halftime, while Mohamed Salah put the Reds ahead of the game just seven minutes after the halftime break. Hwang Hee-chan scored Wolves’ second goal of the game in the 66th minute.

Wolves manager Julen Lopetegui has been furious after his team were denied a winning goal against Liverpool in the FA Cup. Defender Toti Gomes put the ball into the back of the net in the final moments of the game.

However, his goal was disallowed for offside by the assistant referee. His decision was confirmed by VAR even though there was no camera angle available to confirm the decision.

ITV Sports Anchor said after the game: “We believe there is no definitive angle to prove the assistant wrong. Therefore, they make the assistant’s decision.”

Cody Gakpo reflects on his debut

New Liverpool signing Cody Gakpo made his debut during the Reds’ FA Cup clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers. After the match, he revealed that he is relatively happy with his performance.

Speaking to LFCTV, he said: “Really a great environment for me. [first] Home game. I think I showed some good moments and some sloppy moments. So I can still improve on that point, keep working hard and try to help the team as much as I can.”

Cody Gakpo joined Liverpool from Eredivisie club PSV Eindhoven during the ongoing transfer window. He enjoyed an excellent time with the Dutch club after joining as a youth prospect in 2007.

Gakpo made 159 appearances (in all competitions) for PSV, registering 55 goals and 50 assists. He won the 2021-22 Dutch Footballer of the Year award.

Liverpool is currently sixth in the Premier League, with 28 points from 17 games. They then face Brighton and Hove Albion at Falmer Stadium on January 14. The replay of the FA Cup third round tie between Wolves and Liverpool is scheduled for the week beginning January 16.
