Sean Dyche makes Liverpool fan and “King Kenny” admission

Sean Dyche is currently out of work, having left Burnley last season, and has had the chance to talk in a more relaxed way about football and that led to some great stories about Liverpool and Sir Kenny Dalglish.

Speaking to SPORTbible, the 51-year-old spoke about the team he supported when he was young: “I was a kid in the seventies so I supported Liverpool. My local club, Kettering, Kettering Town, my father and I used to go and watch them, they were pretty big on the non-league scene, but Liverpool from a distance.

He then went on to talk about his favorite player and meeting him: “It has to be King Kenny, I met him under the strangest of circumstances because obviously I’m a man and he treats you like a man in football, in my brain me.” I’m like, ‘you’re King Kenny,’ and he’s just talking to me saying, ‘oh, okay, Burnley is doing well,’ and I keep saying, ‘you’re King Kenny,’ in my head.

“Weirdly, I was at the Championships and he was at a Preston game, I don’t remember why he was there, he was just there and he tapped me on the shoulder and said, ‘Okay, Sean.’ I met him on another occasion when he was at Anfield. It’s just that weird thing where they say don’t meet your heroes, but Kenny is a true legend.”

It is interesting to hear that the Kettering-born manager is, or at least was, a fan of our club and shows the far-reaching effects of the domestic and European success that occurred in the 1970s and 1980s.

Not only that, but also the attraction of one of the greatest players to ever play for the club, whether as a fan or as a teammate – it’s hard not to have respect and adoration for our legendary number 7.
