Football news: Germany legend Lothar Matthaus has criticized England boss Gareth Southgate for allowing Jamal Musiala to switch his allegiances from England to Germany.
Matthaus also mockingly thanked the Three Lions for gifting such a talented player.
The teenage footballer has become a sensation at Bayern Munich and features regularly in the German giants’ starting eleven.
Musiala has also appeared for the German national team and has 15 caps for the four-time World Cup winner. He also represented Germany at Euro 2020.
The talented footballer was born in Stuttgart and his mother was German. At the age of seven, his family moved to England, where he spent his childhood.
Musiala spent most of his youth career at Chelsea before moving to Bayern Munich. He spent nine years in the English academies, making him eligible to represent England.
In 2020, Musiala made his professional debut with the Bayern youth team. But he didn’t stop there, as he became the youngest player to play for Bayern in the Bundesliga. He made his debut at the age of 17 years and 115 days.
The player was also part of Bayern’s 2019-20 Champions League winning squad. The young player scored his first goal in the Bundesliga against Schalke and became Bayern’s youngest goalscorer in club history. He was just 17 years and 205 days old. Muisala’s contract will run until 2026.
Musiala was eligible to represent three countries which were Nigeria, England and Germany. The young midfielder played for the England Under 15-21 team. But he now he has committed himself to the German squad.
Matthaus’ mockery
Matthaus is very optimistic about Musiala’s potential and compares him to Argentine superstar Lionel Messi. He spoke: “When he is on the pitch, this is like Messi three years ago.”
Musiala is a very versatile footballer who can play in different midfield positions. He primarily plays as a winger, but can also play in midfield or attacking positions.
In an interview with the Daily Mail, Matthus said his son is a big fan of Musiala and always buys the number 42 jersey for Bayern Munich and the number 14 jersey for Germany. Matthus also made fun of the England manager’s choice and spoke: Best player of the young English generation in Germany: Musiala.”
The German legend also praised the young player’s pace, dribbling, passing and scoring ability.
Matthus thinks: “In the future, he will be one of the best players in the world.” On the other hand, Southgate blamed Bayern’s influence on the player. He “liked her to stay [with England] by the way.”
Jamal Musiala will be a key player for Germany at the World Cup in Qatar. His chances of making the England squad would be slim, as there are so many competitions for that role.
