David Benavidez frustrated he’s not been able to land a marquee fight

During a conversation with Fight Hype, David Benavidez discusses the state of his career, specifically his aspirations to secure a big boxing fight. Benavidez says that after being in the professional ranks for nearly a decade at this point, he’s ready for his chance on the big stage and says he’s frustrated that some notable dance partners have snubbed him. This is some of what Benavidez said on the subject.

“I feel like if (Canelo) isn’t going to fight me anymore, then what’s going on because I have the interim WBC belt,” Benavidez questioned. “There are rankings for a reason. So I don’t know who’s going to have to figure that out, Canelo figure it out or the WBC figure it out, but I’ve earned my spot repeatedly. I’ve won two title eliminators, won an interim title. It’s not my fucking fault these guys don’t want to fight me.

“I’m trying to make the Caleb Plant fight, I’m trying to make the fucking Morrell fight, Charlo. I thought we were going to do the fight with Morrell in November, December, now they say he has to take a mandatory fight, which sucks because if they wanted to fight me, PBC would have done the fight right there. I feel like everyone wins right there.

“It’s a great fight. I’m not saying anything bad about Morrell, he’s a great fighter, but I feel like I’m the superior fighter. And Charlo, everyone knows what’s going on with Charlo… It’s a little frustrating because I feel like they blame me a lot because they feel like I’m the one not making the fight happen, but I’m trying 100%. to make every fight happen. If it’s not Canelo, he’s not giving me a chance, if it’s not Charlo giving me a chance or Caleb Plant, it’s just frustrating.

“I’ve been professional now 10 years… I want a big fight. I want a tough fight, where everything is even, it’s 50/50. Because I have worked with world champions since I was a little boy. I have sparred with world champions all my life and I know what kind of fighter comes out of me when the competition is on the same level as me or the talent is higher than me: the best of me comes out. That is why I am not afraid of any man, I will accept any challenge. And these fights, let’s be honest, these fights are all 50/50. Nothing is guaranteed, but I want the challenge.

“I feel like the company (PBC). we’re making each other look stupid because nobody’s fighting each other and everybody wants to get on point, this and that. Caleb Plant is talking all that shit, saying ‘they’re calling me but they already knew he had a fight signed with Anthony Dirrell,’ that’s bullshit. When I fought on May 21, he didn’t have any fights scheduled. I told him I wanted to fight him, we could have made that fight happen. So what is he saying to him, ‘oh he only calls me when I have a fight lined up’? That’s fucking bullshit, bro.”
