Jamie Carragher was reluctant to use the word ‘special’ in association with Darwin Nunez but remains confident Liverpool have become ‘a real player’.
The Scouser pointed to the numbers of the Uruguayan in the famous red shirt after his latest effort meant the striker has a goal contribution rate of one every 92.87 minutes.
“When you really look at the minutes he’s been on the field and how many goals he’s scored per minute, his numbers are really scary,” the former Red told CBS Sports.
“He has probably been there for 20 minutes and has achieved his goal. In fact, it had a big impact, but there is still something that is not there where Jurgen Klopp has to play it every game, he is still looking for a system to fit it.
“He is very, very raw. But I think there is something, special is probably a little too much, but there is something in it. You can’t take your eyes off him when you watch him play.
“I think Liverpool have a real player.”
While it’s not fair to compare the 23-year-old (reportedly on £140,000 a week, according to National News) to Manchester City’s Norwegian goalscoring fan Erling Haaland, it’s understandable why so many have wanted to see a lot. over from the Merseysiders’ £64million man.

His form since the three-game suspension for a header on Joachim Andersen, however, would suggest a genuine corner has been turned and Nunez is on an upward trajectory.
So far, it’s unclear where that means he’ll land at the end of the campaign, but it’s certainly clear that early categorizations of the former Peñarol hitman as a costly dud were BIG on target.
There is still much more to come from the striker and Carragher in identifying the raw nature of the Liverpool man’s talents, but we are absolutely certain that Jurgen Klopp will bring out the best in him for years to come.
