Benavidez Sr. Unimpressed with Canelo’s Win Over Golovkin, Says ‘David Will Stop Him in 7 Rounds’

The father and trainer of super middleweight contender David Benavidez is more convinced than ever that his son will not only defeat Canelo Alvarez in a potential fight, but stop the Mexican superstar at a distance.

Jose Benavidez Sr. wasn’t exactly impressed by Alvarez’s points victory over Gennadiy Golovkin in their trilogy on Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Alvarez, 32, heavily dominated Golovkin, 40, for most of their undisputed super middleweight bout to win by unanimous decision, but his efforts didn’t exactly reflect on the scorecards. All three judges saw a much more competitive fight than most other observers, with results of 115-113, twice, and 116-112.

“I guarantee you with this kind of performance, David will stop him in seven rounds,” Benavidez Sr., who attended the Alvarez-Golovkin fight card, told FightHype.com.

Benavidez Sr. has not been shy about criticizing Alvarez in recent years, as he is convinced that Alvarez is afraid to face his son in the ring. While Benavidez Sr. believes Alvarez completely beat Golovkin, he also apparently believes it’s proof that his son will have his way with the box office star.

“He won, he won,” Benavidez Sr. said of Alvarez. “To be honest, ‘Triple G’ did a great job. To be honest, I thought he (Golovkin) was going to be stopped maybe in six or seven rounds. Incredible. He did all the rounds and caught Canelo with some combinations, hooks and uppercuts as well. He had a mark, you know. for being [40] years he did amazing.

“But I think like I said, ‘the Mexican Monster’ (David Benavidez) will stop him (Alvarez) in six or seven rounds.”

At the post-fight press conference, Alvarez was asked about fighting Benavidez, to which he responded that the 25-year-old Mexican-American has done “nothing” to deserve a fight.

Benavidez Sr. noted that he believes Alvarez has reached his peak as a wrestler and that is why he wants nothing to do with his son.

“That’s the reason he doesn’t want to fight David,” Benavidez Sr. said. “Fighting David at 168, [David is] older, younger, 25 years old, hungry, that’s why he doesn’t want to fight David Benavidez.

“We’ve seen (Alvarez’s) spike,” Benavidez Sr. said. “Like I said, no disrespect, this guy has been super disciplined, he’s been working really hard. It would be very difficult for someone to get to where they need to be.

“But within time everything has an end. I think this is the end of it. That’s why he doesn’t want to fight David Benavidez.”
