La Liga giants FC Barcelona want to sign Real Sociedad midfielder Martín Zubimendi as a replacement for Sergio Busquets.

Born in San Sebastián, Martín Zubimendi joined the Real Sociedad academy at a very young age.

He soon graduated from the academy and was promoted to the club’s third team. Zubimendi impressed playing for the C team and was promoted to the reserve team. He then signed his first professional contract in 2018 and was soon introduced to the senior team.

A few weeks later, Zubimendi established himself as a starter on the Real Sociedad side. The midfielder played a very important role in Sociedad’s victory in the Copa del Rey in the 2019-20 season. He later participated with the Spanish team in the Olympic Games. Zubimendi also made his senior debut for Spain when the under-21 team was called up to represent the senior team following an outbreak of COVID-19.

Now, according to a report from Marca, Catalan giants FC Barcelona want to sign Martin Zubimendi in the coming season.

Xavi’s team sees him as the ideal replacement for club captain Sergio Busquets. After graduating from La Masia, Busquets became the backbone of the Barcelona team. He was a starter for more than a decade.

But now its best moment is past. The midfielder’s contract will end next summer. Busquets, who will soon turn 35, does not want to continue at the club. Therefore, Barcelona is looking for multiple players who can replace the Spaniard in the upcoming season.

Replacing Busquets is going to be a very hard job. There are few in the world who play like Busquets. And the young man from Real Sociedad Martín Zubimendi is one of those unique profiles.

The midfielder is known for his reading of games, energy, plays and defensive skills. And with age on his side, he can fit in perfectly in Barcelona’s midfield. However, signing him will be very difficult for the Catalan giants.

Zubimendi recently signed a contract renewal with Sociedad that will keep him at the club until 2027. He is currently seen as untouchable and Barcelona have no choice but to pay his release clause worth €60m to Real. But first, the midfielder will have to be convinced that he is currently very happy at Sociedad.

Meanwhile, Spanish giants Barcelona are off to a great start to their La Liga season. The Blaugrana have won ten of their first twelve matches. With thirty-one points from twelve games, they currently sit second in the table.

Xavi’s men will face UD Almería in their next match.
