Last night exposed the true size of Antonio Conte’s task at Tottenham – opinion

Antoni Conte has been maligned by the usual raucous minority, but if the Italian’s tactics aren’t producing engaging football, they are producing results that no amount of mithering can diminish. Tottenham remains comfortable in third place and advanced to the knockout stages of the Champions League last night.

Where the fanbase generally agrees is that the January transfer window must be important. Historically, winter windows aren’t much to write home about. I reviewed the last decade of Daniel Levy’s business and this past January he stuck out like an extremely sore thumb. The Kulusevski and Bentancur acquisitions reflected what Conte called a strange window, one that he heralded unequivocally as one addressing past mistakes.

One only has to look at the value of our current loan players to see that this is true. I have referred to these players as hidden. To believe that any of these stars could develop, improve, or (no laughing at the back) even attract buyers is fanciful. However, that’s just the tip of the iceberg for Levy. The team in North London continues to be plagued by staff who are not fit for purpose.

The blind defense of Bryan Gil and Djed Spence is commendable but unfounded. To the best of my knowledge, Conte routinely takes training sessions at Hotspur Way. Is it really his considered opinion that the serial winner is making a series of poor selection decisions?

Last night he highlighted what the coach is facing.

Sessegnon was nothing short of desperate. It has been established that Spurs probably overpaid for Emerson Royal, but against Marseille, Ryan was in no position to tie Emerson’s laces. Totally successful actions, an uncompromising and at-a-glance reflection of a player’s competition; the Brazilian was twice as useful. Basic passing accuracy was the same story. Royal was far from perfect, but what is Conte supposed to accomplish with this Hobson’s Choice setup at this club?

Conte is a bona fide miracle worker and if Levy doesn’t continue to address his past mistakes, then Conte won’t be around.
